Chicago State wants Obama presidential library

CHICAGO >> A public university on Chicago’s South Side is vying to become the home of President Barack Obama’s presidential library after he leaves office.

Chicago State University officials and Alderman Anthony Beale are forming an exploratory committee to urge Obama to consider a South Side site. The committee will consider the university’s campus and locations such as the historic Pullman community.

Former Illinois Sen. Emil Jones Jr. is chairing the panel. Chicago State President Wayne Watson says the president’s personal connection to the area gives the school an advantage. Obama started his political career on the city’s South Side.

Others competing for the library include the University of Chicago and the University of Hawaii. A group from Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood is promoting the lakefront site of a closed hospital.
