The Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue could be fined as much as $48,000 for 14 safety and health violations cited by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Nine of the violations were described as serious, involving failure to safely and properly store and label propane tanks, electrical wiring deficiencies and unsafe electrical work practices.
Incorrect use of flexible cords as substitutes for fixed wiring, exposure to energized parts and failure to ensure that only qualified personnel worked on electrical circuits were also identified as serious violations during a routine inspection Feb. 14, a news release said.
A majority of the violations related to the resort’s maintenance department, said Galen Lemke, director of OSHA’s Honolulu Area office.
The resort has 15 business days to comply or contest the findings.
The hotel said in an email, "We immediately addressed the items OSHA brought to our attention and will continue to diligently monitor all of our safety practices at Kauai Beach Resort."
The resort has more than 270 employees.
