Miano heads Gridiron Performance camp
Former University of Hawaii and current Kaiser High football camp Rich Miano will headline the inaugural Gridiron Performance Academy football combine and camp for youth from ages 6 to 18 years old.
The event, which also will be hosted by Chad Ikei and Brian Kaupiko, will be held on weekends from June 8-23 at Kaiser High field and gym. The three-week combine and camp will be divided by grade groups each weekend.
Youth Division (grades 1-5) will be June 8. Junior Division (grades 6-8) will be June 15-16. High School Division (grades 9-12) will be held June 21-23.
Each player will be tested in vertical leap, broad jump, 40-yard dash and lateral agility. There will be a bench press for high school athletes. Players also will review video of their play and receive instructions on how to improve.
All players need to bring gym shoes and football cleats for on- and off-the-field training. Applications can be filled out at GPAfootball.com/registration. Applications are also available at all Jamba Juice locations, World Gym and 24 Hour Fitness Centers. For information, go to GPAFootball.com or email coach@gpafootball.com, or call (808) 384-3265.
Balentine earns academic All-District honor
University of Hawaii senior high jumper Samantha Balentine was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 second team, becoming the sixth Rainbow Wahine to earn all-district recognition.
Balentine, from Lodi, Calif., captured gold medals in the heptathlon and high jump at the Big West Championship earlier this month. She was also selected as the Big West’s Field Athlete of the Year. She made her fourth appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Round last week in Austin, Texas, but failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
