Patacchia, Zietz, Payne advance in Fiji
Hawaii’s Fred Patacchia won his first-round heat today in the Volcom Fiji Pro surf contest at Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji.
Patacchia got past Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz and South Africa’s Jordy Smith to advance to the third round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event.
Zietz moved into the second round.
Hawaii’s Dusty Payne placed second to Australia’s Kai Otton to advance into the second round.
Sumner makes D-II All-America third team
Hawaii Pacific first baseman Kale Sumner was chosen to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II All-America third team.
This award is the latest in a string of honors for Sumner after an outstanding 2013 season. Last week, the Kailua product was chosen as an honorable mention on the Daktronics All-America team. He was also selected as all-region by three different organizations in addition to being named all-conference at first and third base.
Sumner hit .386, with 41 runs, 21 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 42 walks and 51 RBIs. He won the PacWest batting title, and was also the league leader in on-base percentage (.509), doubles, hits (66) and walks.
Sumner will now wait to see if he will get a call during the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Thursday through Saturday.
Kua-McCauley win Pro-Pro title on Maui
TJ Kua and Shawn McCauley parred the fourth playoff hole to hold off David Braxton and Kyle Hayashi and win the Kaanapali Pro-Pro Championship on Monday on Maui.
Kua and McCauley shot 1-under-par 70 in Sunday’s opening round, but rallied with a 64 on Monday. Braxton and Hayashi shot 67 both days.
Both teams parred the first three playoff holes (Nos. 18, 1 and 18), then headed to the par-3 17th. Kua put his tee shot on the green and McCauley hit to the fringe. Braxton and Hayashi both went in the water. McCauley got up and down to clinch the victory.
The winning team split $3,000 and the runners-up shared $2,000. Juan Rodriguez and Mark Morrison (67—135) took third. Kirk Nelson and Justin Newsome, who shared the first-round lead with Braxton and Hayashi, closed with a 71 to take fourth.
Forty Aloha Section PGA teams competed.
Exemptions awarded for golf event
Hansol Koo, Erica Chiang, Colin Lazlo and Jamie Amimoto accepted the Hawaii exemptions for next month’s Adams Championship.
Koo shot 2-over-par 74 at the Turtle Bay Fazio course on Monday, while the other three carded 75s. All four play in the 15-18 age division.
The qualifier was run by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. More than 100 golfers participated in windy conditions.
The 2013 Adams Championship is July 25-26 at Forest Akers Golf Course in Michigan.
In the younger age divisions, Miki Manta (75) and AJ Teraoka (78) won 11-12s and OIA champion Mari Nishiura (77) and Zack Kaneshiro (73) 13-14s.
