UH triple jumper finishes 16th in NCAAs
University of Hawaii triple jumper Amanda Alvarez placed 16th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Alvarez, who entered as the sixth seed, fouled on her first two attempts and settled for a 41-11.5 (12.79m) on her third jump. The senior from Vancouver, Wash., just missed on a possible personal best on her second attempt but clipped the board. She posted the seventh-best mark in her heat but was not one of the top nine to qualify for the finals.
San Diego State’s Shanieka Thomas captured the title with a mark of 46-4.75 (14.14m).
By finishing 16th, Alvarez was selected as a second-team All-American. She completes her career as the Big West champion in the triple jump and bronze medalist in the long jump. She is the school’s outdoor triple jump record-holder as well as heptathlon event record holder in the long jump. She was the first in school history to compete in the NCAA triple jump championships.
