Officer remains hospitalized after accident
A Honolulu police officer remains in a hospital in critical condition following Friday night’s Makaha crash after he was allegedly rear-ended by a drunken driver.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, two counts of negligent injury and driving without a license. He was released Sunday pending further investigation.
The accident occurred at 11:20 p.m. Friday on Farrington Highway near Kapakai Place.
The police officer, a 10-year veteran with the Kapolei district, was heading north when he was hit by the suspect, driving an SUV. The policeman lost control of his vehicle, rolled over, crashed through a brick wall and landed in a yard in front of a home.
The SUV then hit a truck carrying nine people in the opposite direction.
The police officer was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the SUV and his passenger were also taken to a hospital for their injuries.
Surfer’s death confirmed as drowning
The Honolulu medical examiner’s office Monday confirmed that the 49-year-old Honolulu man who died last week while surfing at Ala Moana Bowls died from an accidental drowning.
The victim, identified as Richard Sasaki, was pulled from the water Thursday and transported in critical condition to a hospital, where he later died.
Motorcyclist, 21, in serious condition
Paramedics took a 21-year-old man to a hospital in serious condition Monday morning after the motorcycle he was operating collided with a car in Kapahulu.
Emergency Medical Services said the accident occurred on Kapahulu Avenue at about 8 a.m.
