The editor-in-chief of the Honolulu Weekly is considering restarting the publication.
Mindy Pennybacker said she’s looking at turning the Weekly into a nonprofit entity with help from the Nation Institute. She is also looking for investors and considering raising money through an online funding platform such as Kickstarter.
She said the editors and writers of the Weekly support restarting the alternative newspaper.
"They feel this is a unique outlet for them," she said.
Pennybacker said that while she’s reassessing the Weekly’s marketing and business plan, she wants to retain the Weekly’s edge as a cultural hub featuring investigative reporting as well as stories on cultural events.
"I do think people go to our weekly for our listing of arts, music and food," she said. "We also have a little more time than a daily for analytical stories."
THE 22-year-old publication, founded by Hawaii resident Laurie Carlson, shut down operations after its June 5 food issue was delivered. It said it would resume publication in the fall.
Pennybacker worked briefly as editor of the Weekly in 2008. Before returning as its editor in 2011, she lived in New York and worked as a research editor at Glamour magazine, a senior editor at This Old House and Plenty magazines, and a contributing writer to The Nation.
She has also worked at the Natural Resources Defense Council and as editor-in-chief of The Green Guide, which became National Geographic’s online green consumer publication.
She said people can contact the Weekly through its Facebook page until the end of this month and get on an email list to receive updates on its progress at newhonweekly@gmail.com.
