Gusty tradewinds expected to blow in today and Friday have prompted a high-surf advisory for east shores, small craft advisories and gale warnings.
Forecasters say a high-pressure system north of the islands is strengthening and will bring winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 40 mph.
Surf of 6 to 8 feet is expected on east shores today and Friday. Forecasters say strong breaking waves and rip currents will make swimming difficult and dangerous.
The high-surf advisory was to be in effect from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Friday.
A gale warning also as to go into effect at 6 a.m. today for the Alenuihaha Channel between Hawaii island and Maui.
Small craft advisories are posted for other Hawaiian waters.
Forecasters say wind advisories may also be posted for the Kohala mountains and other parts of Hawaii island as well as the Haleakala summit on Maui as winds continue to strengthen today.
Winds should peak before the weekend, but will remain breezy into next week.
