A bang stick, or underwater firearm, sold primarily as protection against sharks and other underwater predators, was confiscated this week at an island airport, the Transportation Security Administration reported.
The .44-caliber bang stick was found in the carry-on bag of a passenger at Kona Airport. Bang sticks, sold at Kailua-Kona dive shops, are prohibited in carry-on bags.
They are designed for protection against sharks and other marine predators while scuba diving, spearfishing, boating, fishing or snorkeling. The bang sticks are also used for hunting alligators and wild hogs.
Also this week, a razor blade was found concealed in a passenger’s shoe at Honolulu Airport.
No arrests were reported by the TSA.
Of the 43 firearms confiscated by the TSA this week at the nation’s airports, 36 were loaded. No firearms were discovered at Hawaii airport security checkpoints this week.
TSA officials say it’s important for travelers to examine bags to make sure no prohibited items are inside. If a prohibited item is discovered, the traveler could be cited and possibly arrested by local law enforcement.
