Sailor designs hat for ocean enthusiasts
Does the world really need another trucker hat? Yes! When it’s a “Get Salty” design by Blair Townley. The sailing enthusiast was looking for sun protection but was bored with the surf brands so she created her own — appropriate for boaters, fishers and anyone who spends time on the water, or who has a salty personality. The hats are screen-printed in Hawaii; I discovered them at the Sugarcane boutique in Kaimuki for $22.50. Call the shop at 739-2263 or check “where to buy” at GetSaltyHawaii.com.

Gadget splits ripe mangoes for fruit lovers
I’ve got a crop of mangoes coming in, so this mango splitter from Oxo is sure to get a lot of use. Just line up the fruit and press. The eye-shaped blades cut nicely around the pit, leaving two halves that can then be cut or spooned out. At $20, the folks at Executive Chef in Kailua (888-4874) said they can barely keep them on the shelves.

7-Eleven stocks Japanese snacks
Long a stop for Slurpees and Spam musubi, Hawaii’s 7-Eleven stores now offer more international flavors with the introduction of its Seven & i Premium line of snacks. These tasty morsels come by way of Japan so product descriptions are mostly in Japanese. But don’t worry, everything has a picture of what’s inside. Sweet flavors dominate the new line, although Japanese-style can sometimes mean the sweetness is a bit muted, and that’s true here. The Butter Cookies ($1.99) are fantastic with a cup of coffee, while the Chocolate Donuts ($3.99) are airy little bits of puffed chocolate that may quickly become an obsession if you’re not careful. After eating my way through most of the new Seven & i Premium snacks, I’ve found my favorites to be the Chocobo ($2.29) and Cheese Rings ($2.39), with the Kabukiage ($1.99) and Nori Senbei ($3.79) a worthy replacement for the bags of potato chips on nearby shelves. And if your picks are missing from the shelf at your local 7-Eleven, come back in a day or two. They’re really good at keeping the snacks in stock. Keep trying. It’s worth it.

Soaps, lotions, shampoos dress resort experience
The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai offers many pleasures, chief among them beachside access to the Kona-Kohala Coast, wildlife-nurturing brackish ponds and ancient lava trails. Another pleasure: Kawili Project soaps and lotions developed by L.A. fragrance artisan Haley Alexander van Oosten as a Hawaii-exclusive line for L’Oeil Du Vert in consultation with late Hawaiian healer and herbalist Alapa‘i Kahuena. I love the La bar soap ($4.44) and lotion ($23.56) made with shea butter, organic lemongrass, ginger and turmeric. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are $36.30; all have a heavenly botanical scent, a light yet body-nourishing feel, and a shelf life of up to a year at room temperature. Find them all at the resort’s Seaside Beach shop or call the concierge (808-325-8000) to mail order.

Versatile blanket covers lots of summertime needs
Friday marks the official start of summer, but picnics, trips to the beach and outdoor concerts are already in full swing. Take along this convenient, all-weather blanket large enough to fit a small family (including the dog). What’s important to me is that it’s water repellent, throws off sand with a shake, folds and zips up, and is machine washable. There are straps for carrying and it also works as a seat cushion on bleachers when folded. This one is called Montauk Stripe but there are other patterns and prints for $19.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond.
