Witness thwarts car theft in Kailua
A Kailua man is in police custody facing several charges, thanks to the actions of a witness who prevented the suspect from leaving a crime scene at a Kailua business Friday.
Police said the suspect, 26, was seen breaking into a car Friday at the parking lot for Longs in Kailua.
A 54-year-old man stopped him from fleeing by blocking the suspect’s path with his van.
The witness told police the suspect got out his car and allegedly punched him through the open driver’s-side window. The older man got out his car and was again attacked by the suspect, who then fled, leaving his car because it was blocked by the van.
Police found the suspect at his home Monday and arrested him on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, criminal property damage, assault and contempt of court.
Man arrested for hitting police officer
A 44-year-old man was arrested just after midnight Wednesday in Chinatown after he allegedly punched a police officer.
Police said the officer was issuing the suspect a citation when the suspect hit the officer and ran from the scene.
The suspect was caught and arrested on suspicion of harassing a police officer, who suffered only minor injuries.
Mokuleia brush fire kicks up again
A Mokuleia brush fire that had burned Monday rekindled briefly Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the quarter-acre blaze in Mokuleia past the Dillingham Airfield.
The first alarm came at 4:13 p.m. and was contained in 15 minutes after the first call.
One company and two tankers responded. Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said firefighters saturated the area to ensure the brush fire would not reignite.
Firefighters had been called out to a fire Monday and said they suspect a downed power line was the cause of the blaze.
Homeless man accused in burglary
Police arrested a 38-year-old homeless man who allegedly burglarized a Kapahulu-area home.
Police said a woman saw the man leaving the home at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.
A representative for the homeowner told police the man had no authorization to enter or take anything from the home.
Police arrested the man at 4:45 p.m. on suspicion of first-degree burglary, drug offenses and unauthorized possession of confidential and personal information.
