A diver’s paradise

Andy Butler has spent decades cultivating his garden, which also features items he has recovered from half a lifetime of diving. The areas around his home, built in 1927 and purchased by Butler 35 years ago, feature bromeliads, palms, orchids and exotic plants; his garden is recorded in the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Gardens. One of his diving finds, part of a World War II-era airplane propeller, is displayed among the foliage.

The interior of Butler's home is an extension of his yard. Glass fishing floats, coral and colorful bottles decorate the living room, which peers out to the garden.
