Honda is new Punahou wrestling coach
Former state champion wrestler Yoshi Honda is the new wrestling coach at Punahou.
Honda has not been active at the high school varsity level since coaching at ‘Iolani six years ago. In 12 years under him, the Raiders won the boys state title in 2003 and the girls state crown in ’05.
"I’m very excited to be working with the kids. I look forward to coaching again. It is my hope to maintain the commitment to excellence that Matt Oney and Jimmy Takatsuka instilled over their 23 years," Honda said.
Under Oney’s direction, the Buffanblu won six consecutive boys titles from 2007 to ’12. They also won two state girls titles in ’09 and ’10.
Honda won state individual titles at Radford in 1981 (126-pound weight class), ’82 (126) and ’83 (138).
