Google and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau will use Google’s Street View Trekker equipment to collect 360-degree images of Hawaii.

In this first-of-its-kind partnership, the initial phase of the image collection, using equipment deployed via backpack, will focus on Hawaii’s most popular hiking trails.

The initial mapping phase will commence on Hawaii island this month in partnership with Kailua-Kona-based Hawaii Forest and Trail.

A team from Google has been on the Big Island this week, introducing HVCB and Hawaii Forest and Trail staff to the Trekker equipment, and practicing on various trails including to the Pololu Valley Lookout, Akaka Falls State Park and inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to an HVCB statement.
