Tennessee man dies in latest drowning on Kauai

A Tennessee man died after being found unconscious Wednesday afternoon while snorkeling in waters off Nualolo Kai along the Na Pali Coast, the Kauai County Fire Department said.

The 48-year-old man was part of charter group that had stopped in the area to allow patrons to swim and snorkel, the department said. Fellow swimmers found the man in distress at about 2:40 p.m. and brought him to shore.

People performed CPR until fire department Rescue 3 aboard a helicopter arrived shortly after 3 p.m. Rescuers flew the man to Waimea Canyon Ball Park. Awaiting medics drove him to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials did not immediately disclose the man’s name.

It was the 12th drowning on Kauai this year. Statewide, 27 tourists have died this year while engaging in outdoor activities such as swimming or hiking, including 18 drownings or apparent drownings.
