Wie withdraws from U.S. Women’s Open
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Michelle Wie withdrew from the U.S. Women’s Open, citing illness, before she would have completed the fog-suspended second round, set to miss the cut.
Wie pulled out Saturday morning. She was at 11 over for the tournament with one hole to go when play was halted Friday evening.
On her very first hole of the Open, Wie had a quadruple-bogey 8 on No. 10 on Thursday. She finished with a first-round 80.
She played better in tougher conditions Friday, shooting 3 over through 17 holes, but it was nowhere near enough to make the cut, which wound up at 6 over.
Wie tweeted Friday night: “There are no words to explain how disappointed I am in myself right now.”
The 23-year-old former prodigy hasn’t won since 2010. She finished no better than 41st in her first six tournaments this year but had an encouraging tie for ninth at the LPGA Championship earlier this month.
