Former Hawaii head coach Dick Tomey is returning to the television booth as the color analyst for OC Sports’ pay-per-view telecasts of University of Hawaii football games.
Tomey, 75, succeeds Darnell Arceneaux, who is now the quarterbacks coach at Occidental College. Tomey was a color analyst for KFVE’s football telecasts in 2001 and 2002.
"It’s a wonderful chance to be involved (in football) and yet still have enough time for my grandchildren and all those people who matter so much to me," Tomey said.
Tomey and his wife have eight grandchildren.
Tomey was UH’s head coach for 10 seasons, through 1986, compiling a record of 63-46-3. He was head coach at Arizona for 14 years and at San Jose State for five seasons.
Tomey returned to UH as coordinator of special teams in 2011. He has held several consulting positions the past two years, including work with the Casino Del Sol all-star game.
OC Sports general manager Dan Schmidt said Tomey was an easy selection. Schmidt was KFVE’s program director when Tomey worked as that station’s color analyst.
"Who knows more about college football than Dick Tomey in this market?" Schmidt said. "The reason I liked having him (as analyst) is he’s lived his life for the game of college football. He has incredible passion for the game. That’s the feeling I want the viewers to get when they watch the game. Tomey has devoted his life to that."
OC Sports play-by-play announcer Robert Kekaula described Tomey as an "icon" to UH football.
Tomey said he looks forward to watching the Rainbow Warriors prepare through practices, as well as build working relationships with the players and coaches.
"Obviously, I have a tremendous passion for UH and what it’s involved with," Tomey said. "I couldn’t be more pleased."
