Sataraka helps U.S. to 2 victories
Honolulu’s Mysha Sataraka continued to pace the U.S. offense by driving in four runs in a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday in the International Softball Federation Junior Women’s World Championship in Brampton, Ontario.
The Punahou graduate went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in a 15-0 win over Puerto Rico. She then went 1-for-3 against host Canada, contributing an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth in a 4-0 win.
The U.S. (5-0) closes pool play today with games against Korea and New Zealand.
UH players earn water polo honors
Two Hawaii water polo players — senior attacker Monika Eggens and senior center Amarens Genee — earned recognition by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.
Eggens was named to the organization’s All-America first team, while Genee made the third team.
Eggens holds the UH and Big West Conference records for single-season goals (101), and is the Rainbow Wahine’s all-time leading scorer (252). She was also a first-team All-American as a junior and a second-teamer as a sophomore.
Genee was the Rainbow Wahine’s second leading scorer with 64 and also was a third-team All-American her junior season. She is UH’s third all-time leading scorer with 185.
Michnev, Hwang take PacWest honors
Hawaii Pacific’s Petr Michnev and Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Annie Hwang earned Pacific West Conference tennis honors last week.
Michnev was named men’s co-player of the year and Hwang was picked as the women’s player of the year.
Michnev shared the honor with Jochem Hoefnagels of Azusa Pacific.
Other men from Hawaii’s Division II colleges to earn PacWest recognition were: HPU’s Jaume Martinez-Vich (freshman of the year, first-team singles), Hendrik Bode (coach ot the year), Gerald Moretti (second team) and Max Hertl (third team); and BYUH’s Yevhen Zakharov (first team), Martin Chojnacki (second team) and Wei-Feng Lee (second team).
The men’s doubles teams of Michnev/Moretti (first team), Chojnacki/Zakharov (first team), and Adriano Locorotondo/Yann Renault (HPU, second team) were also recognized.
Other women’s honorees were: Hawaii Pacific’s Karen Ramirez (co-newcomer of the year, second-team singles), Laura Conching (co-coach of the year), Ielyzaveta Rybakova (first team), and Celina Goetti (second team); and BYUH’s David Porter (co-coach of the year), Sherry Liu (first team), Marika Kobayashi (second team), and Marietta Tuionetoa (second team).
The women’s doubles teams of Hwang/Liu (first team), Kobayashi/Tuionetoa (first team), and Vivian Hansen/Magdalena Smejova (HPU, second team) also received honors.
2 Hawaii volleyball teams win gold medals
Ka Ulukoa and Southside won their respective divisions at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championships this week in Reno, Nev.
Led by MVP Austin Matautia, Ka Ulukoa took the gold medal in the 15 club division, going 9-1 and avenging its only loss of the tournament by defeating SMBC in the championship match, 25-23, 25-22. Also named to the all-tournament team were Ka Ulukoa’s Kainoa Miyamoto, Seyi Engleman and Bryson Barlan.
Head coach David Engleman was assisted by Jon Franquez. Other team members were Dalton Chan, Elijah Hew Len, Zachary Franquez, Donovan Delgado, Aaron Oyasato, Micah Tokiwa, Maxwell Marabella and Dylan Takaki.
Southside from Hawaii island won gold in the 14 club division, finishing a 12-0 run with a 25-17, 25-17 victory over Pittsburgh. Members of the team coached by Samuel Thomas were Logan Thomas, Cole Labrie, Tristen Cross, Abishai Campbell, Kameron Moses and Mai‘a Makuakane. Also, Addison Enriques, Chase Carter, Daylan-Blake Kalai, Christopher Correa, Avery Enriques and assistant Guy Enriques.
Southside defeated Oahu’s Ku‘ikahi 27-29, 25-21, 15-13 in the quarterfinals. Ku‘ikahi, coached by Serafin David Jr., finished 7-3 in earning a bronze medal.
NBA personnel lead Elite hoops camp
The Hawaii Elite Basketball Camp, featuring lead coaches from the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets organizations, will be held July 18-21 at the Mid-Pacific Institute gym.
The lead clinician for the camp will be Dave Severns, the director of player development for the Los Angeles Clippers. Also heading the clinic will be Herb Livsey, a scout for the Nuggets and owner and director of the Snow Valley Basketball School, one of the nation’s largest basketball camps.
The clinic is open to boys 13 to 18. The sessions are from 1 to 8 p.m. July 18-19, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20-21.

Oahu pool players going to nationals
Thirty Oahu residents will compete in the National Pool Championships in Las Vegas in August.
The players will be competing in team 8-ball and 9-ball, doubles and masters at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in an event conducted by the American Poolplayers Association.
Two teams — Pearl City Elks and 5-Stars — will vie for $25,000 in first-place prize money in the open division from Aug. 18-24. They will be joined by more than 700 other qualified open teams.
Pearl City Elks members are Tim Liden, Ray Jablonski, Randy Reicherts, Tom Bentkowski, Richard Park III, Ellen Elliott and Ron Spain. The 5-Stars’ members are Julio Fonoti, Kevin Courter, Mark Samaniego, Joelle Miller, Tau Tua, Tiger Fuimaono and Iz Fuimaono.
In 9-ball, Katsu Sauce will vie for the $15,000 first-place prize, Aug. 14-20. Team members are Brian Kumura, Katsu Ito, Brian Funakoshi, Sherry Rotenberry, Brandon Yoon, Shaun Murakami, James Whitten and Sandra Sugimoto.
Two teams — Team OMG in 8-ball and Team Mix Plate in 9-ball — qualified in doubles. Timmy Nakamura and Landy Kimura will compete for Team OMG, Aug. 15-17. Andrew Hong and Chase Nanod will compete for Team Mix Plate, Aug. 21-23.
Also, Poolplayers in Paradise of Honolulu qualified for the APA Masters Championship to be held Aug. 18-21. Team members are Steve Van Ness, Nathan Berlier, Ryo Yokawa and Seven Weakly.
The open teams qualified by winning a three-day tournament held at Hawaiian Brian’s. The doubles teams qualified by winning a tournament held at TJ’s Sports Bar & Grill. The masters team received an automatic berth to the event.
