Lahaina woman kills self in handgun training class

Maui police are investigating the shooting death of a 44-year-old Lahaina woman Sunday afternoon at Ukumehame Firing Range.

Police said the victim, after loading a .22-caliber revolver, placed the barrel of the gun under her chin and pulled the trigger. The instructors who witnessed the incident had no time to react before the weapon was fired, police officials said. The incident occurred at 3:40 p.m.

Police said that the woman was part of a firearms education safety class that was being conducted by Central Guns & Ammo at the shooting range.

The name of the woman was withheld pending the notification of her family.
