A pick-up truck struck a 24-year-old man who was walking in the roadway on the Pali Highway Saturday night, critically injuring the pedestrian, police said.

The accident happened at about 10:40 p.m. near the Pali Tunnel in the Kailua-bound lanes.

Paramedics took the 24-year-old man, whom police said lived at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, to the hospital in critical condition.

Police said the overhead lights in the area were not working Saturday night. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors on the part of the driver, a Kailua man.

Police said it is not known if the victim had been drinking.

Honolulu police closed Pali Highway in the Kailua-bound direction after the accident happened at about 10:35 p.m. The highway reopened at about 2 a.m.
