Another month, another new thrill ride. Coming only a couple of weeks after the announcement of the Rio’s new tower-to-tower zip line, US Thrill Rides LLC has submitted plans to build a $100 million combination roller coaster and observation tower.
The "Polercoaster" will be 650 feet tall, making it the tallest roller coaster in the world and the third-tallest structure in Las Vegas, at about half the height of the 1,149-foot Stratosphere and slightly below the unfinished Fontainbleau’s 735 feet (it will be 8 feet taller than Palazzo).
While the primary draw will be the coaster, if approved, the top of the structure will function as an observation tower, accessed by two glass elevators built into its core. The proposed location hasn’t been disclosed, but the consensus is that it will be built at the Tropicana.
» Hot: Last Sunday’s 117 degrees tied the mark for the hottest day ever in Las Vegas. The record for highest minimum temperature was also tied at 89 degrees, and last month went into the record books as the hottest June in Las Vegas history, with the average temperature of 91.5 degrees surpassing the previous record of 90.5 degrees.
» Famous fountains: The Bellagio fountains were named the No. 1 U.S. landmark in TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards, beating out Gettysburg National Military Park, the USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, the Top of the Rock Observation Deck and other famous American sites and spectacles. The fountains didn’t fare as well on the global list of top landmarks, though, coming in 12th.
