LOS ANGELES » The 2013 Transpacific Yacht Race is underway.

The 47th Transpac began Monday afternoon with the first group of sailboats departing Los Angeles for Honolulu — a distance of 2,225 nautical miles, or more than 2,500 statute miles.

The Transpacific Yacht Club says this year there are 58 entries from multiple countries competing in nine divisions. One other entrant was disqualified for failing to complete a required safety inspection.

Divisions with the slowest boats started at 1 p.m. PDT off Point Fermin, outside Los Angeles harbor. A second group starts on Thursday and the final group sets sail on Saturday. The finish line is off Oahu’s Diamond Head.

The race dates to 1906 and is held every two years.
