Woman dies after being struck by car in Hilo

A 61-year old woman died early Wednesday after being struck by a car in Hilo.

Hawaii County police said the victim was crossing Kamehameha Avenue just south of Kalakaua Street at 8:59 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a 1998 Honda four-door sedan driven by a 35-year-old Hilo woman. 

The woman was not in a marked crosswalk, police said. The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she died at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday. 

The driver of the vehicle and her passengers were not injured. 

Police do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were involved. 

Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation. 

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. 

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119. 

This is the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 14 at this time last year.
