Owens delivers in loss
Reigning CFL most outstanding player Chad Owens totaled 204 all-purpose yards for Toronto in a 39-28 loss to Saskatchewan on Thursday.
Owens had a game-high eight catches for 95 yards and added 121 return yards for the Argonauts, who have lost two straight since winning their season opener.
Owens averaged 20.4 yards on five kickoff returns and brought back five punts for 19 yards. He currently leads the CFL with 301 receiving yards.
UH, HPU athletes in University Games
Four student-athletes from University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific are participating in the 27th World University Summer Games in Kazan, Russia. They are among more than 10,000 athletes from 162 countries competing in 27 sports. The Games end Wednesday.
Thursday, former Rainbow Wahine TeRina Keenan took sixth in the discus. Keenan, competing for New Zealand, threw 171 feet, 10 inches on her last attempt.
Rainbow sophomore Amund Gismervik of Norway was 11th in 1-meter springboard diving.
HPU’s Petr Michnev and Malte Ziegenhagen are currently competing in tennis and basketball.
Michnev, this year’s PacWest Tournament MVP, is playing for Czech Republic. He got a first-round bye, then beat Mexico’s Alfredo Moreno Figueroa 7-6, 6-4. In the third round, Michnev took out Switzerland’s Patrick Olivier Eichenberger, 6-4, 7-5. The next round is Saturday.
Ziegenhagen, the Sea Warriors’ leading scorer last year, is representing Germany, which is 3-1. He has played 25 minutes so far, collecting eight rebounds, six assists and four points. Germany takes on Russia today.
Former Wahine contribute for Australia
Former University of Hawaii standout Clare Warwick went 3-for-4 in the Australian national team’s 3-2 loss to Japan on Thursday in the opening game of the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City.
Kaia Parnaby, who completed her UH career this spring, gave up one run on four hits in three innings of relief against Japan, the reigning world champion. Former UH All-American Stacey Porter went 1-for-4 for Australia.
Australia faces the United States today. The game will be televised on ESPN starting at 2 p.m.
