Oahu records 36th traffic death this year
A 54-year-old man died at a hospital after crashing his moped into a telephone pole in Manoa on Sunday morning.
Police said the man was headed downhill on Woodlawn Drive near Alani Drive around 7:06 a.m. when he lost control of the white 2005 moped he was driving.
He suffered "massive head injuries" and was taken in extremely critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.
Police said the man was not wearing a helmet and that no other vehicles or occupants appear to have been involved in the crash.
It has not yet been determined whether alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
Police closed Woodlawn Drive between Waipuna Rise and Alani Drive until about 9 a.m. as officers investigated.
The traffic fatality was the 36th on Oahu this year, compared with 32 at this time in 2012.
Unanchored dive float prompts search
The Coast Guard spent Sunday afternoon searching for a possible missing diver after a dive float was discovered about 100 yards off a Kahe Point beach.
The unanchored orange float — marked in black lettering with the brand name Hawaii Blue — was found by people aboard the passenger vessel Kai Oli Oli.
The Coast Guard sent an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point to look for the diver. The crew is coordinating its efforts with city Ocean Safety personnel.
The Coast Guard is asking anyone with information that may help identify the owner of the dive float to contact the Honolulu command center at 842-2600. Mariners in the area are asked to keep watch for anyone in distress.
