Fire destroys abandoned house on Beretania Street

Fire consumed an abandoned home on Beretania Street Saturday.

Six engine companies, two ladder companies, a rescue crew and a battalion commander were dispatched to the blaze, which was first reported just after 5:30 p.m. at a lot next door to the Auntie Pasto’s restaurant on Pensacola Street.

Police closed Beretania and Young streets in both directions between Pensacola and Victoria streets while firefighters brought the fire under control. Police eventually reopened two mauka lanes for traffic before reopening the entire street at 8:50 p.m.

No injuries were reported and no other structures were damaged.

Auntie Pasto’s closed for the evening and but will reopen Sunday morning, according to a sign on the door.

Homeless people in the area were known to occupy the abandoned single-story structure, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Robert Main.

Fire investigators remained at the scene for several hours, examining the hollowed structure and the trash-strewn area around it.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
