KAILUA-KONA >> A fire that burned about 1 ½ square miles in Kailua-Kona is mostly contained.

West Hawaii Battalion Chief Reuben Chun says crews are at the scene today monitoring conditions and putting out hotspots.

He says an apartment complex was evacuated for several hours when the fire began midmorning Saturday.

Since then, firefighters have been attacking flames that have been burning dead trees and tall grass on the northeast side of Hulikoa Drive, running into Kaiminani Drive.

Chun says things are looking better today. As long as winds aren’t too strong, the deep-seated hotspots aren’t expected to pose threats.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
