Two of the Coast Guard’s newest class of cutters will be assigned to Hawaii’s 14th Coast Guard District.

Sen. Brian Schatz said the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation — on which he sits as a member — has approved $632 million for the Coast Guard’s National Security Cutter program, which allow the Coast Guard to continue acquiring its last two Legend-class cutters. Both will be assigned to the islands.

The Legend — described by the Coast Guard as its largest and most technologically advanced class of cutters — will replace the aging 378-foot Endurance cutters, which have been in service since the 1960s.

The new vessels are 418 feet long with a crew of 148 sailors.
