HPU women’s hoops adds guard
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team announced the addition of 5-foot-9 combo guard Kellie McCann-Smith on Wednesday.
McCann-Smith spent time at both Nebraska and Washington and has one and a half seasons of eligibility remaining. She will redshirt the 2013-14 season.
She averaged four points and 1.4 rebounds in 14.4 minutes in the 2011-12 season. She left the Huskies after one semester last year for personal reasons.
Swimming academy medals at Jr. Olympics
Local swimming club American Renaissance Academy collected 63 medals at the 2013 Jr. Olympics completed at the University of Michigan on Monday.
The seven-person team — which finished seventh overall — was led by captain Derek Tanazaki Hudson, who collected six gold medals. Other members of the team were: Cody Porter, Michael Gillis, Hunter Bruno, Kealni Tanazaki Hudson, Samantha Beck and Kaina Tanazaki Hudson.
Hawaii team drops back on Maui
Host team Hawaii dropped into seventh place Wednesday at the 41st annual Boys Junior America’s Cup, being played at Wailea Gold golf course on Maui.
The six teams ahead of Hawaii (218—433) are under par. San Diego moved into the lead after shooting 13-under 203 in the second round. At 415, it is eight shots ahead of Mexico 2 (211—223) and nine up on Northern California (211—224). First-round leader Mexico 1 (218—427) fell into fifth behind Southern California.
Going into the final day, San Diego’s Jonah Texeira (65—135) is the individual leader. Hawaii’s Shawn Lu (71—142) is tied for 11th, followed by teammates Spencer Dunaway (72—144), PJ Samiere (75—147) and Keegan Loo (84—156).
In other golf Wednesday:
» Mexico padded its lead in the second round of the Girls Junior America’s Cup, at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque. Hawaii, which has won two of the last three Cups, pulled into a tie for sixth heading into the final day, but is 29 shots back.
Team Mexico has four players among the top five individually.
Hawaii shot 10-over 226 in the second round, led by Kaci Masuda and Zoey Akagi-Bustin, who fired 75s. Kristin Le had a 76 and Keilyn Ing 80. At 149, Macuda is tied for 15th individually. She is followed by Akagi-Bustin (151), Le 154 and Ing (166).
» Pearl City’s Mariel Galdiano surged into fifth place in the 38th Junior PGA Championship, at Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Va. The state high school champion fired a 2-under-par 69 in the second round.
At the halfway point Galdiano is at 141, three shots behind leader Samantha Wagner (71—138), from Florida. Hawaii’s Allisen Corpuz and Brittany Fan both shot 72 and are five shots out of first.
In the Boys Flight, 2012 state high school champion John Oda (70—140) is tied for ninth, four shots back of leader Brad Dalke (71—136), from Oklahoma.
