Fatal-crash victim was Mountain View man
The 36-year-old man who was killed when the SUV he was driving hit a utility pole and a tree in Puna has been identified as Patrick W. Agcalon of Mountain View.
The identity of Agcalon’s male passenger, who also died at the scene Wednesday afternoon, is being withheld pending identification and notification of next of kin.
Hawaii County police have initiated a negligent-homicide and coroner’s inquest investigation. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death. Police say speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
Police said the SUV was traveling east on North Glenwood Road when it ran off the road at about 3:45 p.m.
Suspect held in torching of automobile
A 31-year-old Waipahu man is in police custody after allegedly breaking into two cars Wednesday night in a Waimalu parking lot and setting one of the cars on fire.
Police said the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m.
The suspect was found hiding near the car fire and was arrested on suspicion of second-degree arson, trespassing, contempt and breaking into a vehicle.
Police officer assaulted during traffic stop
A 31-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly assaulting a police officer after a traffic stop in Waianae.
The man allegedly damaged police equipment and assaulted the officer, who had stopped the man on a traffic violation. The suspect was released pending investigation.
Mauna Kea remains are of missing man
Human remains discovered last week at the 12,000-foot elevation of Mauna Kea have been identified as those of a man reported missing in 2007.
Hawaii County police said the remains were identified through dental records as those of Brian Patrick Murphy of Plymouth, Mich., who was 67 when he went missing in the area in December 2007. Police said Murphy had been hiking alone.
Parking spaces will be removed to ease traffic
A Kauai County public works crew will remove parking spaces on Rice Street fronting the Kauai Museum starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday to improve traffic in downtown Lihue.
During the work, the far-right westbound lane by the museum will be closed.
The County Council adopted a resolution last month at the request of the county engineer, authorizing removal of the parking spaces.
Snorkeler’s body is found off Kaanapali
A 41-year-old visitor from California died Wednesday while snorkeling off Kaanapali.
The snorkeler was reported missing just before 7 p.m. Wednesday. His body was found Thursday morning by Maui Fire Department’s helicopter near Black Rock. The victim was last seen entering the ocean fronting Kaanapali Villas with a snorkel and mask but no fins, Maui Fire Department Capt. Bram Denhaan said.
The body was spotted about 30 feet below the surface and about 70 feet from the shore near Kaanapali Villas, Denhaan said.
