Inouye, Lautenberg honored in ceremony
The late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye was remembered in ceremonies Sunday at the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., part of the annual "Tribute to the Greatest Generation."
Also honored was U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, who died June 3. Inouye, who died Dec. 17, and Lautenberg were the Senate’s last World War II veterans.
Inouye’s son, Kenny, and Terry Shima, former director of the Japanese American Veterans Association, were speakers at the ceremony. Shima served with Inouye as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
The tribute is held every August to remind America of the legacy of World War II.
A wreath was also laid Sunday at Inouye’s grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in a ceremony organized by Vanita Rae Smith, whose lost her father in the war in 1945.
Wailuku driver is killed when SUV overturns
A 23-year-old Wailuku man was killed Sunday night when he was thrown from a sport utility vehicle after losing control of it in Waiehu.
Killed in the 11:49 p.m. accident was Zachery T. McGuire, Maui police said.
Also injured was a 28-year-old front-seat passenger from Wailuku who suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Speed, alcohol and drugs appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
Police said McGuire was driving a 1995 Toyota 4Runner SUV west on Limu Ele Ele Street and tried to make a left turn onto Omilu Place. The SUV failed to complete the turn and overturned, coming to rest on its driver’s side on the southwest corner of the intersection.
Alleged assault on police officer results in arrest
Hawaii County police have arrested a 48-year-old Puna man wanted in the assault of a police officer Saturday.
According to police, the suspect was involved in a domestic abuse and terroristic threatening incident Saturday night at Hawaiian Beaches Park in Pahoa. The suspect allegedly assaulted one of the officers who responded to the incident before fleeing the scene.
The suspect was found Sunday evening hiding in the brush in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision. He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, domestic abuse and terroristic threatening.
Police also arrested the suspect’s 27-year-old son, who was nearby, for two outstanding warrants and for the alleged burglary of an apartment complex in Hilo.
