A benefit will be held Sunday to help a 19-year-old Kaneohe man with medical expenses tied to injuries he suffered in a shark attack off the Leeward Coast.
The event for Kiowa Gatewood will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Ruby Tuesday restaurant at Windward Mall. Gatewood is a server at Ruby Tuesday.
Gatewood’s punk/ska and reggae band, The Instigators, as well as his guitarist sister-in-law, Holly Lakanaria, will perform at the benefit.
On July 29, Gatewood was attacked by what was believed to be a tiger shark, between 9 and 12 feet in length, while surfing at White Plains Beach.
The shark bit Gatewood’s left leg, injuring an area from above his knee to his shin bone. He underwent surgery at Queen’s Medical Center, receiving 30 staples before he was released from the hospital.
His grandmother Eleanor Hee said his recovery will take about six months, and Gatewood will not be able to return to work until February.
The benefit will be held to help offset out-of-pocket medical expenses that insurance doesn’t cover.
Those unable to attend the event may make a donation at any Bank of Hawaii branch to the "Kiowa Gatewood Recovery Fund."
