Ma goes for 3 at OCC Invitational
Matt Ma’s quest for a three-peat begins this morning at the 50th annual Oahu Country Club Men’s Invitational. Ma tees off at 7:45 a.m. with Manoa Cup champ Jared Sawada and Richard Hattori, who won at Princeville and Barbers Point this summer.
Ma outlasted University of Hawaii senior Cory Oride last year, winning on the second hole of a playoff. Mervin Matsumoto captured the senior championship.
This year there are 48 in the Open Division, including former champions Jonathan Ota and Brandan Kop, Todd Rego, PJ Samiere, Corey Kozuma, Oride, Ryan Kuroiwa, Alika Bell, Layne Morita and Kai Hayashida, who was third last year.
The 42-man Senior Flight has former champs Paul Kimura, Phil Anamizu, Gary Kong and Wendell Kop, and Mike Kawate, Carl Ho and Lenn Sakata.
Hawaii boys fifth at Hogan Cup
Hawaii finished fifth at last weekend’s 45th Eddie Hogan Cup, a boys team competition played at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Ore.
British Columbia closed with a round of 211 to win with a two-day total of 3-over-par 435, two shots better than Washington. Hawaii finished at 217—442.
BC’s Kevin Vigna was the medalist at 67—141. Moanalua senior John Oda was the top Hawaii player, placing fifth at 144.

» Entries are still being taken for next week’s Oahu Country Club Women’s Invitational. Format is Stableford scoring, with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start Monday and Tuesday. Entry fee is $185.
