University of Hawaii football coach Phil Rauscher does not have to worry about an over-crowded classroom.

Rauscher, who coaches the tight ends, leads a position where the student-teacher ratio is 3-to-1. Well, maybe it’s 2.5-to-1 because Craig Cofer splits time between tight end and defensive end.

"There’s a lot of one-on-one coaching right now," Rauscher mused.

The Rainbow Warriors had six tight ends in spring training.

Justin Vele suffered a fractured ankle during the spring game and is not expected to be medically cleared for a couple of weeks. Josh Long, who suffered a concussion in a skateboard accident in June, is recuperating in California. Long is expected to redshirt this season.

Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson, who was poised to be the No. 1 tight end, sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder on the fourth day of training camp. Clark Evans suffered a concussion during a scrimmage on Tuesday. Both are expected back next week.

The three healthy tight ends are Cofer, Harold Moleni and freshman Matt "Meffy" Koloamatangi, who was moved to offense last week.

"We had a freak injury in the offseason and spring ball, and then the wear-and-tear of camp," Rauscher said. "We only go with four tight ends in camp, anyway, and then you lose two of them, and all of a sudden you’re coaching one guy in practice."

Head coach Norm Chow said it is an unfortunate coincidence for one position to incur numerous injuries.

"It seems like it happens all the time in camp," Chow said. "Whether you lose all your receivers or something else, something always happens."

Moleni spent most of the time with the first-team offense on Wednesday.

"Harold has picked it up from where he was last year," Rauscher said. "He’s gotten faster, and he’s in better shape. We’re happy with his progress right now. He’s lost some weight and gotten some muscle."

Moleni said he feels more comfortable with the offense after essentially a three-year hiatus. He returned from a two-year mission in the fall of 2011, then signed with the Rainbow Warriors in February 2012.

"I feel a lot more part of the program," Moleni said.

Moleni said he lost 15 pounds in the offseason, and now weighs 245.

Cofer is the Warriors’ most accomplished blocker among the tight ends. He worked on flexibility and pass-catching during the offseason. Although he dropped a sure touchdown pass during Wednesday’s drill, he rebounded to catch a scoring throw to end the practice.
