Share memories of Beach Boys
It was 50 years ago, in 1963, that the Beach Boys became national hit makers with the release of "Surfing U.S.A." That same year, the group came to Hawaii for the first time, sparking a mutual love affair with the islands.
"I heard about all the pretty girls with their grass skirts down to their knees. All my life I wanted to see the island called Hawaii," Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote in 1963. Over the years, the Beach Boys returned to perform here.
The group and its record label are marking the 50th anniversary of their breakout album with the Aug. 27 release of "Made in California," a six-CD collection. The Star-Advertiser Today section is planning its own celebration, with a look back at the Beach Boys in Hawaii.
