Coast Guard aids snorkeler
A 61-year-old snorkeler was taken to a Lihue hospital by Coast Guard helicopter and cutter Saturday after he lost consciousness on a passenger boat that was about a mile off Kalalau Beach.
The man reportedly passed out after returning to the Na Pali Runabout.
The crew of the Kittiwake transferred him to the cutter.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter then took him to emergency medical services at Lihue Airport. From there he was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
2 tourists help girl at hotel pool
Quick action by two visitors helped a 3-year-old girl who nearly drowned Saturday at a hotel pool in Kaanapali.
According to a Maui Fire Department report, a bystander noticed the girl floating on the surface of the Honua Kai Resort pool and called for help. Registered nurse Thomas Gallegos and his brother-in-law, Mike Westbrook, a firefighter-paramedic, quickly reached the child, helped her breathe and carried her to the pool deck, where she was provided oxygen until Maui fire rescue personnel and paramedics arrived.
The girl was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Fire officials praised the actions of Gallegos and Westbrook, who are visiting from Ventura, Calif.
"As first responders/rescuers, Mr. Gallegos and Mr. Westbrook set in motion the precise actions and treatment the patient required at that moment to survive this incident," said Lahaina Fire Station Ladder 3 Capt. Kevin McAfee.
