Firefighters airlift hiker from crater ridge

A female hiker got into trouble Monday morning on the way down from Koko Crater and had to be rescued by firefighters.

The Honolulu Fire Department received her cellphone call for help just before 11 a.m., said Fire Capt Terry Seelig.

The hiker, in her late 20s, had climbed up the Koko Crater stairs on the Hawaii Kai side and was coming down the back side of Koko Crater when she had difficulties about halfway down.

Using a helicopter, firefighters lowered a sling to airlift the woman off the ridge just after noon. The woman suffered minor scrapes and did not need medical attention, Seelig said.

Boat capsizes; 5 onboard are rescued

Five people were rescued by the Coast Guard after their boat capsized Sunday afternoon about a mile from the Kalihi Channel near Keehi Lagoon.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call over VHF channel 16 from the owner of the 21-foot boat at about 3:30 p.m.

The five people were taken to Sand Island.

"This case had a happy ending because they had a working VHF radio onboard their vessel," said Lt. Patton Epperson, Coast Guard command duty officer.

Man in serious condition after stabbing

A man in his 20s was in serious condition Monday after an apparent stabbing in the Puna­hou area.

Emergency Medical Services personnel said the stabbing happened at about 3:15 p.m. at 2015 Wilder Ave., an apartment building. No further information was available.
