Waipahu two wins away from title
Tanner Tokunaga pitched 10 innings and scored the winning run in the 12th, and Waipahu advanced to the final day of the American Legion World Series with a 5-4 win over Gonzales, La., on Monday in Shelby, N.C.
Waipahu faces Petaluma, Calif., in an elimination game today at 11 a.m. Hawaii time. The winner moves on to the championship game against Brooklawn, N.J.
Since losing to Brooklawn in its opening game, Waipahu has won three elimination games to stay alive in the tournament. On Monday, Waipahu took a 4-2 lead into the ninth inning, but Louisiana tied the score on a two-run infield single with two outs.
Tokunaga, who struck out three and walked four over 10 innings on the mound, was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the 12th. He then stole second and came around to score on a throwing error on Brent Sakurai’s grounder.
Josh Maglangit retired Louisiana in order in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.
Young leads at Oahu Country Club
Miki Young’s 30 Stableford points give her a one-point lead in the championship flight heading into today’s final round of the Oahu Country Club Women’s Invitational.
Young had three birdies Monday at OCC and accumulated 30 gross points, one ahead of Jeannie Pak and three up on 2011 champion Mira Han.
In this Stableford format, bogeys are worth one point, pars two and birdies three. Championship Flight players have gross scoring, while the other flights have net scoring.
Tracy Chiang’s 43 net points lead A Flight. Adeline Sho (33) is ahead in B and Hiromi Matsunaga (41) in C.
Hayashi beats out Okamura at Kapalua
Kevin Hayashi of Nanea Golf Club carded a second straight 74 to hold off Garrett Okamura of the Dunes at Maui Lani to claim the Visa Hall of Fame Championship on Monday at the Kapalua Plantation Course.
Hayashi had a total of 148 to win by one stroke. Okamura rallied from a first-round 79 with a 70.
Elleair Golf Club’s Kirk Nelson (147) won the senior division, while GolfTec Hawaii’s Bill Hunt (154) beat Kenny Springer in a playoff to win the super senior title.
Maui Invitational tickets to go on sale
Tickets for this year’s EA Sports Maui Invitational will go on sale Wednesday at 9 a.m. on the tournament’s website, www.mauiinvitational.com.
All-tournament and all-day reserved tickets, as well as booster tickets for all eight participating teams are available. This year’s field includes Arkansas, Baylor, California, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Syracuse and host Chaminade.
The Maui Invitational is set for Nov. 25-27 at the Lahaina Civic Center.
U.S. volleyball team outlasts Bulgaria
The top-ranked American women ran their winning streak to six Sunday, rallying past Bulgaria, 16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 15-8, to conclude the FIVB World Grand Prix preliminary round, in Sendai, Japan.
The team’s assistant coach is Hilo’s Reed Sunahara. Kalani alum Tamari Miyashiro started at libero against Bulgaria and had a team-high four digs.
Team USA will try to win a record fourth consecutive Grand Prix in Sapporo, Aug. 28-Sept. 1. It finished 8-1 in preliminaries, falling only to Brazil. Heading into the match against Bulgaria, the U.S. needed a win or five-set loss to advance to the final six.
Hirano, Galdiano win mixed team crown
Remington Hirano and Mariel Galdiano won a three-team playoff to capture the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Mixed Team Championship on Sunday at Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Hirano and Galdiano posted a two-round score of 142, tied for first place with Zoey Akagi-Bustin and Keegan Loo, and Aiko Leong and Kengo Aoshima. On the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th, Hirano and Galdiano birdied the hole after Leong and Aoshima shot par and Akagi-Bustin and Loo carded a bogey.
