Hawaii rates high in auto affordability

Erika Engle

Hawaii is the sixth-least expensive state in which to operate a vehicle, according to a study by personal finance site Bankrate.com.

Researchers calculated the costs of gasoline, insurance, repairs, and taxes and fees, and despite Hawaii’s high gas prices, the state came in sixth-lowest in the U.S., whereas Georgia is the most expensive state on the list.

Estimated annual repairs in Hawaii cost $370, compared to $385 in Georgia; taxes and fees cost an estimated $636 in Hawaii, compared to $1,952 in Georgia; estimated annual gasoline costs $887 in Hawaii versus $1,129 in Georgia, and insurance in Hawaii is $812, as compared to Georgia’s $767. Hawaii’s estimated annual total is $2,705, versus the $4,233 Georgia residents pay.

In the least expensive state, Oregon, estimated annual cost is $2,204.
