Proposed change in flood map to be aired
A community information meeting scheduled for next week is meant to address concerns of Waimalu Stream-area residents affected by a proposed change in the federal Flood Rate Insurance Map.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency in June proposed the new map, which designates a larger portion of the Waimalu residential area as a special flood hazard area, according to City Councilman Breene Harimoto, who is hosting the meeting.
The expansion could change flood insurance rates for residents and property owners in the area. Harimoto urged residents to attend to learn how their properties would be affected.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 29 in Waimalu Elementary School’s cafeteria.
Sheriff’s deputy nabbed in case of felony abuse
WAILUKU » Maui police arrested a state sheriff’s deputy who allegedly choked his 15-year-old son during a domestic dispute.
The Maui News reported 38-year-old Kevin Vaivai of Lahaina is charged with felony abuse by strangulation and child abuse.
Police say the incident was reported Sunday night after the boy’s mother took him to an emergency room.
Police say the teen’s injuries weren’t life-threatening and that the child abuse charge was filed because the incident took place in front of a younger son.
Vaivai was released after posting $5,200 bail. His defense attorney Ben Lowenthal declined to comment Tuesday.
State Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz says the department is conducting an internal investigation. Vaivai has been placed on leave.
