Have you been yearning for some more Las Vegas shopping? Probably not, but if you are, Treasure Island at center-Strip has announced plans to build a three-story, 46,200-square-foot shopping center. The new retail addition is slated for a 19.5-acre site at the southwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Spring Mountain Road, with access to the shopping center available from the Strip and within the resort.
While the structure will reduce the resort’s lagoon area and shorten the track on which the Sirens of TI pirate-ship runs, the plan doesn’t call for the long-running free Sirens show to be scrapped. Since final approvals have not yet been obtained, a construction timetable has not been released.
» Shanghai Nights: Starting Sept. 10 and continuing each Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m., the bar on the 23rd floor at Mandarin Oriental will transform into a Shanghai speakeasy. The "Shanghai Nights" party will feature live jazz and offer cocktails, small plates, sushi and dim sum. Guests will be transported back to the decadent 1930s when Shanghai was known as the "Vegas of Asia."
» New BBQ: After two previous experiments with barbecue restaurants, Red Rock Resort is trying again with the debut of Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que. It’s the second Las Vegas location for the Southwestern chain, whose other restaurant is in the District at Green Valley Ranch.
» Ghostbar returns: After a month-long renovation, the Palms has reopened its 55th-floor hot spot. Ghostbar is open nightly, beginning at 8 p.m.
Question: When I come to town these days, billboards promoting DJs are everywhere. It seems like they’re bigger than the showroom headliners. How much money do they get paid?
Answer: With the nightclubs and Day Life pool parties bringing in huge revenue, the top DJs are bigger than today’s headliners. According to Forbes.com a new record was recently set for the highest-paid DJ in the world: Scottish DJ Calvin Harris takes down a neat $46 million a year, well outdistancing second-place Tiesto, who takes turns playing the big Las Vegas clubs. Other DJs on the list who show up in Vegas include Kaskade, Avicii, Steve Aoki, Deadmau5 and Afrojack.
