A police officer was injured and two men were stabbed during a large fight in Kalihi late Saturday night, Honolulu police and paramedics said.
Police were searching Sunday for suspects in the assault on the officer and the stabbings.
The police officer, a 51-year-old man, was struck on the head with an object and taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to a city Emergency Medical Services report. Police said he was trying to disperse the crowd, which numbered about 50 people, when he was struck from behind.
Officers responded to the fight near 1249 N. School St. and found the injured victims, a 21-year-old man and a 25-year-old man.
Police said the 21-year-old victim was stabbed and the 25-year-old victim sustained a puncture wound to his shoulder.
Both men were in stable condition, EMS said.
Paramedics initially reported that three men were stabbed in the incident at about 10:43 p.m.
Witnesses said they saw people punching, throwing rocks and pieces of wood, and brandishing baseball bats.
Sean Tuuero, who lives in the neighborhood, said the first police officer to arrive had to wait for backup.
"He can’t do anything by himself for a while," he said Sunday.
Witnesses said the fight broke out in the middle of Aupuni Street, just off of School Street.
Tuuero said he didn’t know what started the fight but that "it’s always over there," adding that it’s not the first time fights have broken out in the area.
