1. Beavers Get Busy
» Situation: Oregon State 0, Hawaii 0, 12:10 remaining, first quarter, Oregon State ball, first and 10 at own 49
» The Play: RB Storm Woods goes 48 yards with a pass from QB Sean Mannion before he’s tackled at the UH 3 by LB Brenden Daley.
» Impact: The Oregon State offense gets started early. On the next play, its third of the game, Mannion throws a 3-yard touchdown to TE Kellen Clute. Oregon State never trails.
» Hawaii coach Norm Chow: "They have a nice scheme. They protect really well. They throw enough underneath stuff — screens and the delays — that force you to cover everybody, so the downfield (coverage) gets hurt a little bit."
2. Defense Scores
» Situation: Oregon State 14, Hawaii 0, 10:21 remaining, second quarter, Oregon State ball, first and 10 at Oregon State 28
» The Play: LB Julian Gener intercepts Mannion’s pass behind the line of scrimmage and runs 23 yards for a touchdown. Mannion was under pressure from blitzing SS John Hardy-Tuliau.
» Impact: Hawaii finally gets something positive to avert an early rout. Gener also tied with FS Charles Clay for game high with 11 tackles.
» Gener: "I just jumped in front of the fullback and made a play. I got in front of him. I kind of bobbled it, but I made sure to catch it and take off."
3. Rare Drive
» Situation: Oregon State 14, Hawaii 7, 4:40 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 8 at Oregon State 15
» The Play: QB Taylor Graham fakes a handoff to RB Steven Lakalaka, rolls left and passes complete to TE Clark Evans for a 15-yard touchdown.
» Impact: Hawaii ties it up with its only offensive score of the game. It is the fruit of a steady nine-play, 80-yard drive in which Hawaii never faced third down. It is the only real offense Hawaii generates all game.
» Chow: "We felt fortunate at halftime to be at 14-14. I thought we had a shot."
4. Backing Up His Words
» Situation: Hawaii 14, Oregon State 14, 11:09 third quarter, Oregon State ball, third and 13 at Hawaii 43
» The Play: Mannion finds WR Kevin Cummings for 21 yards and a first down to keep the drive alive.
» Impact: Two plays later, WR Brandin Cooks scores on an 8-yard pass from Mannion. He does so again on Oregon State’s next possession, putting the Beavers in control of the game. Cooks had said during the week that Hawaii had "no chance" to win.
» Cooks: "I’m the type of man who backs what he says. If I said it, and left it out on the table, I had to prove (the prediction) right."
5. Bad Move
» Situation: Oregon State 31, Hawaii 14, 7:38 remaining, fourth quarter, Oregon State kicking off from 35
» The Play: KR Chris Gant takes the kick and steps out of bounds at the Hawaii 1.
» Impact: On the next play, DLs Devon Kell and Mana Rosa tackle Lakalaka in the Hawaii end zone for a safety, extending the Oregon State lead to 19 points. Hawaii is forced to kick the ball away and any remaining comeback hopes are dashed.
» Gant: "I was trying to get the ball in my hands and make something happen."
