Quarterback Gabbert out for Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. >> The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled out Blaine Gabbert for Sunday’s game at Oakland after the quarterback sliced open the back of his throwing hand in the season opener.
Gabbert caught his right hand on a defender’s facemask while scrambling for a 4-yard gain in the closing minutes against Kansas City on Sunday. He received 15 stitches to close the wound.
He won’t be able to practice this week because of concerns that dirt and sweat could get in the wound and cause infection.
Chad Henne will start against the Raiders.
Vereen reportedly breaks bone in wrist
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. >> The first name on the New England Patriots’ official injury report Monday was that of running back Shane Vereen, who was listed as “did not practice” because of a wrist injury. That’s as close as the club came to confirming a Fox Sports report that Vereen broke a bone in his wrist during a season-opening win over Buffalo, had surgery Monday and is expected to be out several weeks.
Before the injury report surfaced, Bill Belichick spoke about Vereen in a conference call in the morning with New England media and gave no hint that anything was amiss. Speaking in the afternoon to media covering the Jets, Belichick said he was awaiting a medical report.
Panthers guard done for the season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. >> The Panthers announced that starting right guard Garry Williams has torn the ACL and MCL in his left knee and will miss the remainder of the season.
The news came Monday shortly after coach Ron Rivera addressed the media at his weekly press conference.
The injury occurred in the first half of Carolina’s 12-7 loss to Seattle after a Seahawks defensive lineman rolled up on Williams’ leg.
The five-year pro won the starting right guard spot in training camp prompting the Panthers to release veteran guard Geoff Hangartner.
