A 22-year-old man who fell from a 30- to 40-foot cliff near the Hale Aloha dorms early Sunday morning is a University of Hawaii Manoa student and police believe no foul play was involved, according to university officials and a police spokeswoman.

Honolulu police said the incident is not classified as a crime.

Elmer Kaai Jr., UH Manoa’s interim director of Advancement and Government Affairs, said the man fell from a cliff near a location known as Manoa Walk, between the Gateway House and Frear Hall leading to the Hale Aloha complex. He said the ledge where the student fell off is clearly visible and fenced off.

"All UHM students, faculty and staff are aware of the danger if they proceed beyond the fenced off area," Kaai said in an email statement.

An initial report from paramedics said the victim is 20 years old and was taken to the hospital in serious condition after the 1:30 a.m fall. However, police later reported that the victim is 22 years old and that he went to the hospital in good condition.

Kaai said, at this time, no disciplinary referrals for alcohol or drug use were made in connection with the incident.
