Colorado man dies on Kauai
An 81-year-old visitor from Colorado died after being pulled from the water at Makua Beach on Saturday, Kauai County officials said.
The man, from Colorado Springs, was snorkeling at Tunnels just after 11 a.m. about 20 to 40 feet from shore when he was spotted face down in the water, officials said Sunday. Bystanders brought him to shore and began performing CPR.
Lifeguards from the Haena tower were first to respond. Paramedics transported the man to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Maui beaches due for cleanup
Volunteers will clean up litter and debris from beaches from Kaanapali to Puamana, Maui, as part of the annual “Get the Drift and Bag It!” initiative Saturday.
The event kicks off a month of informal coastal cleanup drives.
The nonprofit Community Work Day Program, also known as Malama Maui Nui, said the shoreline cleanup begins at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina and runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
All cleanup supplies will be provided for volunteers. Water will be supplied, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bottles and work gloves.
Volunteers may also bring their own bags or buckets for litter pickups and are urged to bike or carpool to the event.
Under the banner of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, hundreds of thousands of people turn out every year to collect trash that threatens our marine environment. While the global effort takes place on a single day, data are accepted for cleanups within
30 days of the September date.
