Park Service wants aquifer managed
KAILUA-KONA » The National Park Service is petitioning the state water commission to designate the Keauhou Aquifer of North Kona as a water management area for groundwater.
The Park Service says proactive management of groundwater withdrawals is urgently needed around Hawaii island’s Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park given the sensitivity and importance of its resources.
The park includes two types of traditional Hawaiian fishponds, as well as a fish trap. The Park Service said Friday the availability of groundwater is critical for the park.
The agency says the state has no plan to protect water-dependent cultural and natural resources from the cumulative effects of groundwater withdrawals in the area.
