Special moments for special teams
The midway point of the prep football season is nearing, and for some it’s behind them.
But the one area that always merits attention and reps is special teams. When Punahou met Kamehameha on Saturday, it was a muffed punt return that gave Punahou a huge opportunity. Trent Sitar was Johnny on the spot, beating two Warriors for the loose football. On the next play, he scored on a touchdown pass from Larry Tuileta.
At Campbell, it was a fumble on a kickoff return by the home team that gave visiting Waianae an early break.
In the second half, the gift was returned when a punt snap sailed over Waianae’s punter, and Unity Kea Cambra recovered the fumble in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown in the Sabers’ 32-24 win.
Patient Kaumatule returns to form
It’s been a fairly long wait, but the patience of Punahou defensive end Canton Kaumatule was rewarded with a 24-0 win over Kamehameha on Saturday.
The 6-foot-7, 275-pound junior isn’t at top shape just yet, but he had enough legs to make a big play, leading the pass rush in a sack of Kamehameha’s elusive quarterback, Noah Sua-Godinet, on the final snap of the first half.
"The game started off really slow. I’m still working with the mechanics, but in the second half I felt more comfortable. I felt a lot more loose," he said. "It’s taking a little more time to come back full speed, but I’m really excited with what I did today."
Kaumatule’s teammates held down the fort in wins over Mililani (24-14) and Helix (Calif.) 10-6. Sua-Godinet’s agility and speed were concerns for Punahou’s defensive unit.
"He’s a good scrambler, he’s really athletic. It really was a challenge, especially for me. I’ve got to work on my conditioning," Kaumatule said.
"There’s always room for improvement."
Kaumatule is rated No. 1 by Rivals.com among defensive ends for the class of 2015.
Kamehameha’s defense also played well, but wore down as its offense struggled.
