Man charged with robbery of Kailua-Kona restaurant

    Klay Brian Bensch was being held on $29,000 bail after being charged in connection with the robbery of a Kailua Kona restaurant.

A 30-year-old Kailua-Kona man is scheduled to appear in court Thursday on charges stemming from a robbery Sept. 11 at a restaurant.

Klay Brian Bensch, of Kailua-Kona was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, kidnapping, second-degree assault and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $29,000. He was being held in the Kona cellblock.

About 10:30 p.m. Sept. 11, after the restaurant had closed, a man entered the premises near Palani Road and Kuakini Highway, approached a female employee from behind, threatened her with a weapon, forced her into another room and grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash. He fled on foot in an unknown direction.
