Oliveira, Toreros climb to No. 2
A record crowd of more than 2,000 showed up for San Diego’s women’s volleyball match against then-No. 1 USC last Friday.
The records kept coming three days later.
The Toreros, led by senior libero C’era Oliveira, a 2010 Hawaii Baptist alumna, earned the highest ranking for any sport ever at USD when they jumped to No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll that was released Monday.
Oliveira had a match-high 25 digs as the Toreros beat the Trojans in four sets on Friday, followed by sweeps against Eastern Washington and UC Santa Barbara to move to 7-1 on the season.
The Toreros earned 13 first-place votes to surpass the baseball team’s No. 4 ranking in 2007 as the highest ever by a USD program.
Oliveira is ranked 50th in the country, averaging 4.88 digs per set.

Mariota at top in Heisman Watch
Saint Louis alumnus and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota has moved into the top spot in the latest ESPN.com Heisman Watch poll released Tuesday.
With 58 points from the panel of 16 expert voters, Mariota is seven points ahead of Clemson’s Tajh Boyd and reigning Heisman winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M.
Mariota received three first-place votes and nine second-place votes among the voters after handing Tennessee its worst loss since 1910 last Saturday.
Mariota threw for a career-high 456 yards and four touchdowns in a 59-14 win over the Vols and also ran for 27 yards and a score before being taken out late in the third period. He completed 23 of 33 passes and became the first Oregon QB to throw for more than 400 yards in a game since 2005, finishing with the third-highest total in school history.
Pacific’s Fukumoto earns honor
Pacific (Ore.) junior wide receiver Jordan Fukumoto, a 2010 Saint Louis alumnus, was named the Northwest Conference offensive student-athlete of the week for football on Monday.
Playing in his first home game since last August, Fukumoto finished with seven catches for a game-high 197 yards and three touchdowns in a 67-30 win over Occidental (Calif.) on Saturday.
Fukumoto, a 2011 All-NWC first-team selection, broke his leg against the Tigers last September and earned a medical redshirt year.
He caught a 74-yard touchdown pass from quarterback T.C. Campbell (Kamehameha ’10) in the second quarter, which is the sixth-longest scoring play in school history.
The two hooked up for a 32-yard touchdown later in the quarter and Fukumoto caught a 42-yard touchdown in the third quarterback from quarterback P.J. Minaya (Hanalani ’10).
Fukumoto currently leads the NWC with four touchdowns. He is also second with 27.1 yards per catch, third with 244 receiving yards and fifth with nine receptions.
Pacific is 2-0 for the first time since 1969.

>> Loxley Keala, ‘Iolani ’13: The Missouri freshman finished with 22 digs and six assists in the Rice Invitational.
>> Haley Pa‘akaula, Kamehameha ’12: The Towson (Md.) sophomore was named to the Lobo Invitational all-tournament team on Saturday. Pa‘akaula hit .257 with 25 kills and 19 digs in three matches as the Tigers went 1-2.
>> Capri Tirrell, Maryknoll ’11: The Towson junior had 20 digs and four aces in the Lobo Invitational.

Scholz went 2-0 last week, recording both a shutout and a combined shutout. She made three saves in a 2-0 win over SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday and made one save in 67 minutes of a 3-0 win over Castleton State on Saturday.

>> David Fink, ‘Iolani ’09: The Oregon State senior shot a final-round 74 to finish in a tie for 20th place at 2-over 218 at the Kikkor Husky Invitational on Tuesday.
